The thriller “The Girl on the Train,” based on the best-selling book of the same name, debuted atop the North American box office over the weekend, according to final figures released today.

The film earned $24.5 million to dominate theaters, according to box office tracker comScore.

Director Tim Burton’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” placed by earning with $15.1 million between Friday and Sunday, while Mark Wahlberg’s action film “Deepwater Horizon” took third with $11.5 million.

The Western remake “The Magnificent Seven” earned $9 million to place fourth, followed by the animated comedy “Storks” with $8.3 million.

The well-publicized “The Birth of a Nation” opened in sixth place, earning just more than $7 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life” ($6.9 million); “Sully” ($5 million); “Masterminds” ($4.1 million); and “Queen Of Katwe” ($1.6 million).
