Actor/writer/filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive the fifth annual People’s Choice Award for Favorite Humanitarian during Wednesday night’s awards show, honoring his efforts on behalf of organizations including the NAACP, Feeding America and Charity Water.

People’s Choice officials said Perry has been active in working to eradicate homelessness, support civil rights and assist survivors of natural disasters including the Haiti earthquake and Hurricane Katrina.

In recognition of the honor, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, which sponsors the humanitarian award, will donate $100,000 to the Global Medical Relief Fund for Children.

“Mr. Perry’s decades long commitment to helping those in need is incomparable, and the GMRF is an amazing organization, dedicated to aiding children in desperate need of care,” People’s Choice Awards President Fred Nelson said. “I’m proud that our show provides a platform for this well- deserved recognition.”

Past winners of the humanitarian award include Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Hudson, Ben Affleck and Ellen DeGeneres.

The People’s Choice Awards ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
