The critically acclaimed comedic horror film “Get Out” led the pack of nominations announced Thursday for the 2017 MTV Movie and TV Awards, earning a total of six nods, including movie of the year.
This year is the first time the ceremony — previously known as the MTV Movie Awards — will recognize television programs as well, leading to the name change for the event.
“Get Out,” written and directed by Jordan Peele, will compete for movie of the year with Disney’s blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast,” the X-Men sequel “Logan,” the box-office hit “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and the drama “The Edge of Seventeen.”
Competing for best actor in a movie — a category that includes male and female performers — will be Daniel Kaluuya of “Get Out,” Emma Watson of “Beauty and the Beast,” Hailee Steinfeld of “The Edge of Seventeen,” Hugh Jackman for “Logan,” James McAvoy for “Split” and Taraji P. Henson of “Hidden Figures.”
On the television side of the awards, nominations for best show went to FX’s “Atlanta”; HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Insecure”; Freeform’s “Pretty Little Liars”; Netflix’s “Stranger Things”; and NBC’s “This is Us.”
Nominated for best actor in a show were Donald Glover of “Atlanta,” Emilia Clarke for “Game of Thrones,” Gina Rodriguez of “Jane the Virgin,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan for “The Walking Dead,” Mandy Moore of “This Is Us” and Millie Bobby Brown for “Stranger Things.”
The MTV Movie and TV Awards will be held May 7 at the Shrine Auditorium, hosted by actor/comedian Adam Devine. To celebrate the expanded show, MTV plans to hold a daylong “Movie & Television Festival” outside the Shrine, featuring musical acts, food and other entertainment that will end with attendees being able to watch the red-carpet arrivals for the awards show.
