Jennifer Lopez will star in and co-produce “Second Act,” described as a romantic comedy in the vein of her 2002 film “Maid In Manhattan,” it was announced Thursday.
The project was developed by STXfilms with Lopez from an idea conceived by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Justin Zackham, who wrote the script and will act as co-producers, according to STX Chairman Adam Fogelson.
Peter Segal (“50 First Dates,” “Anger Management,” “Get Smart”) is on board to direct the film, in which Lopez will play a big box store employee who reinvents her life and gets the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as a college degree.
“There are so many things I love about this project and script,” she said. “People try to put women to sleep at a certain age. ‘Second Act’ is a story that empowers every woman to do more, to be more, and not limit their dreams. I am thrilled to partner with STX as they continue to create and empower the female audience.”
STX recently announced a number of projects produced by and starring such actresses as Anne Hathaway, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer and Michelle Williams.
Lopez is currently working on season three of her NBC television series “Shades of Blue,” serving as a judge on NBC’s dance competition show “World of Dance,” performing on stage in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and putting the finishing touches on a Spanish-language album.
