The much anticipated sequel to the bleak sci-fi classic “Blade Runner” debuted atop the North American box office, besting a thriller about two people stranded on a snowy mountaintop, according to final figures released Monday.
“Blade Runner 2049,” starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, opened with $32.7 million at the box office, according to comScore. That easily topped Kate Winslet and Idris Elba’s “The Mountain Between Us,” which debuted in second with $10.6 million.
This year’s fall juggernaut — “It” — added $10 million in domestic sales between Friday and Sunday.
The more family friendly “My Little Pony: The Movie” opened in fourth place with $8.9 million, followed by the spy-thriller “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” with $8.7 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies over the weekend were “American Made” ($8.4 million); “The Lego Ninjago Movie” ($7 million); “Victoria and Abdul” ($4.2 million); “Flatliners” ($4 million); and “Battle of the Sexes” ($2.6 million).
