Petty, 66, died at UCLA Medical Center at about 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 2 after he was brought there by paramedics from his home in Malibu.
An autopsy has been conducted, and the cause of death was listed as “deferred,” said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter, who declined to elaborate.
The Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner’s page on the county of Los Angeles website explains that in the process of some death inquiries “occasionally, more extensive testing is required, in which case an interim or ‘Deferred’ death certificate is issued, which allows the family to make funeral arrangements. An amended death certificate will follow after completion of special testing.”
According to Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Petty suffered cardiac arrest early on the morning of Oct. 2 and was taken to the hospital, where he died peacefully, surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.
Petty had just wrapped up a 40th anniversary tour on Sept. 25 with the last of three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl.
