Memo to Doria Ragland of View Park-Windsor Hills: Your daughter is getting married May 19. It’s a Saturday.
Ragland will have to book a flight to England, though. Her daughter is LA actress Meghan Markle, and she’s getting hitched to Prince Harry at St. George’s Chapel.
The weekend date is a break from tradition. Royal weddings tends to go on weekdays.
But the sniping doesn’t stop there. British sites are noting the crazy connotations of May 19.
For example (as onthisday.com notes):
- In 1536, Anne Boleyn, second wife of English King Henry VIII, is beheaded at the Tower of London on charges of adultery, incest and treason.
- In 1568, English Queen Elizabeth I arrests Mary, Queen of Scots.
- And in 1506, Christopher Columbus selects his son Diego Columbus as sole heir.
But the biggest bump is the wedding falls on the day of the 2018 Football Association Cup Final. (Like Super Sunday in the States.)
As president of the soccer league, a UK site notes, “Harry’s older brother the Duke of Cambridge usually attends the high-profile match and presents the trophy. But this year, William, who is tipped to be Harry’s best man, looks likely to be otherwise engaged with wedding duties.”
