The Oscar race for best picture could become a little clearer Saturday evening when the Producers Guild of America holds its annual awards ceremony, with its choice for best film of the year often leading to success at the Academy Awards.

Since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded from five to 10 nominees, no film had won the best picture Oscar without first winning the PGA Award — but that trend was bucked the last two years. In 2016, the PGA Award went to “The Big Short,” but the Oscar went to “Spotlight.” Last year, “La La Land” won the PGA honor, while the Academy honored “Moonlight.”

The crime drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which won the Golden Globe Award for best drama film, and the fantasy romance “The Shape of Water,” which won the top prize at the Critics’ Choice Awards, have emerged as front-runners during awards season, and they’ll battle for the PGA’s coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

The teen drama “Lady Bird,” which won the Globe for best comedy/musical film, is also in the running for the PGA honor. Also nominated are “Call Me By Your Name,” “The Big Sick,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “I, Tonya,” “Molly’s Game,” “The Post” and “Wonder Woman.”

For animated films, producers of “The Boss Baby,” “Coco,” “Despicable Me 3,” “Ferdinand” and “The Lego Batman Movie” are all nominated for the PGA honor.

Documentary nominees are the producers of “Chasing Coral,” “City of Ghosts,” “Cries from Syria,” “Earth: One Amazing Day,” “Jane,” “Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower” and “The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee.”

On the small screen, the producers of “Big Little Lies,” “The Crown,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Stranger Things” will compete for top drama series. For comedies, the nominees are producers of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Master of None,” “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.”

The producers of “Get Out,” the horror film-turned-social commentary on race relations, will be honored during the ceremony with the guild’s Stanley Kramer Award, which recognizes films focused on important social issues.

Also during the show, Donna Langley, chair of Universal Pictures, will receive the guild’s Milestone Award, the organization’s “most prestigious honor.” Producer Charles Roven will receive the David O. Selznick Acheivement Award recognizing his career in film production, while Ryan Murphy will receive the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television.

Producer/director Ava DuVernay will receive the Visionary Award, recognizing cultural contributions through storytelling.

The 29th annual Producers Guild Awards will be presented at the Beverly Hilton.
