The only thing people could agree with at the end of Fergie’s rendition of the national anthem Sunday was her cry: “Let’s play some basketball!”
Long after Team LeBron’s 148-145 victory over Team Steph at the NBA All-Star Game at the Staples Center is forgotten, Fergie will be remembered.
Perhaps not topping Roseanne Barr’s infamous off-key (and crotch-grabbing) version at a 1990 San Diego Padres game, Stacy Ann Ferguson (aka Fergie Duhamel) still hit some low notes.
By noon Monday, a YouTube video had 17,000 comments, including a few giving the Hacienda Heights resident a pass (or suggesting: “Give this girl some auto tune.”)
Among our favorites:
- This national anthem singing was so bad that Collin Kaepenick stood up and told her to stop disrespecting the anthem.
- That microphone had to be put down because it was too traumatized to ever be used again.
- Love what Bob Saget tweeted: “Fergie’s rendition of the National Anthem was originally written by Francis Scott Out of Key.”
- It’s like trying to drink a cup of hot tea in an earthquake. Excruciating and unbearable.
- Never thought anyone could make it sound slutty but here it is proving me wrong.
- Fergie is taking a lot of flack for this. She should keep in mind that my shoulder is always there for her if she needs one to cry on.
- She’s clearly doing a (bad) Billie Holiday impression. She’s not a bad singer, just made a bad choice to sing it this way.
- And: She gotta retire after this.
Here’s the competition:
And more reaction, including from Barr herself:
Who saw Fergie’s national anthem performance at the NBA All Star Game? I think mine was better lowkey

Good morning to the leader of the resistance, @Fergie. Thank you for your service!

Well….. I got what Fergie was going for with The National Anthem. I saw the vision. You just would’ve actually had to be Ella Fitzgerald

Fergie gotta come out like “I felt like that was the national anthem this country deserved” and pretend it was a political protest.

fergie’s national anthem is like every lady gaga song: at first i hated it but after my 2000th listen, i think it’s the greatest work of all time?

Just got @Fergie statement about #NBAAllStar perf: “…Last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”https://t.co/zTp554w62V
