‘Roma,’ ‘Green Book’ Look to Gain Oscar Momentum at Producers Guild Awards

Just days before Oscar nominations are announced, films such as “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” will look to bolster their awards-season credentials Saturday evening when the Producers Guild of America presents its annual honors.

The PGA prize for motion pictures is traditionally a strong indicator of which film will win the Oscar for best picture.

“Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” have already won Golden Globe Awards for best comedy/musical and drama film, respectively, although those prizes are presented by the relatively small Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Mexican film “Roma” by director Alfonso Cuaron was named best picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Vying with those films for the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures will be the producers of “Black Panther,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “The Favourite,” “A Quiet Place,” “A Star is Born” and “Vice.”

Since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded from five to 10 nominees in 2010, only two films have won the best picture Oscar without first winning the PGA Award.

In 2016, the PGA Award went to “The Big Short,” but the Oscar went to “Spotlight.” The following year, “La La Land” won the PGA honor, while the Academy honored “Moonlight.”

Last year, both honors went to “The Shape of Water.”

Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday morning.

Vying for the PGA prize for animated films are the producers of “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

The 30th annual Producers Guild Awards will be presented at the Beverly Hilton.

During the ceremony, Toby Emmerich will receive the guild’s Milestone Award, Kevin Feige will receive the David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures, Amy Sherman-Palladino will receive the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television, Kenya Barris will be presented with the Visionary Award and Jane Fonda will receive the Stanley Kramer Award.
