Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” made its long-awaited debut on international movie screens this weekend, grossing $53 million in 41 countries, including Canada, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Analysts are closely watching the performance of the thriller starring John David Washington, the first major international Hollywood release since theaters shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Tenet” is also being released in large-screen IMAX theaters, where it made $5 million Friday through Sunday on just 248 screens, according to the industry tracking group Comscore.

The film is scheduled to debut in select theaters in the United States on Thursday, though Southland theaters remain closed indefinitely.

Meanwhile, “The New Mutants” opened to an estimated $7 million this weekend in North America. The 20th Century Studios’ youth-oriented fantasy appeared on 2,412 screens in the United States and Canada.

“Unhinged,” a violent thriller starring Russell Crowe, grossed $2.6 million in its second weekend in North American theaters, playing at 2,331 locations.

“Bill & Ted Face the Music” opened with just over $1 million at 1,007 theaters.

Searchlight Pictures’ “The Personal History of David Copperfield” made $520,000 at 1,360 locations.

“Words On Bathroom Walls,” based on the novel by Julia Walton and released by LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions, earned an estimated $453,360 Friday through Sunday on 1,356 U.S. screens, Comscore reported.

Paramount’s “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run,” which is playing in Canada only, earned $400,000 at 314 locations in its third weekend for a cumulative total of $2.94 million.
