The animated family film “The Croods: A New Age” opened on top of the North American box office this weekend, grossing a healthy $9.7 million despite reduced theater capacity amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The comedy/horror film “Freaky” was a distant second in its third week of release, taking in $770,000, Comscore reported.

“The War With Grandpa,” a family comedy in its eighth week in theaters, took third place with $643,936 Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada.

The drama “Let Him Go” took fourth place with $453,000, followed by the horror film “Come Play” with $387,000.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Honest Thief” ($350,000), “Tenet” ($300,000), “The Santa Clause” ($170,000), “Vanguard” ($165,000) and “The Last Vermeer” ($145,000).

Indoor movie theaters in Los Angeles and Orange counties are closed indefinitely due to the pandemic, leaving only limited outdoor screenings available in Southern California.
