She’s in the midst of thrilling sold-out crowds across the country on her “Eras Tour,” but Taylor Swift Wednesday became one of 398 people invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Academy extended the membership offers to professionals in its various branches, with Swift’s invitation coming from the Music branch, noting her musical contribution to the films “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “Cats.”
Also included among the new invitees among actors were new Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Oscar nominee Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Selma Blair, Nicholas Hoult, Keke Palmer, Paul Reiser and Bill Hader.
Others earning spots on the list include “Everything Everywhere” directors/producers David Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, musician David Byrne, and producers Keith Calder, Andrew Goldman and Mark A. Radcliffe.
“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement. “They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide.”
According to the Academy, membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with an eye toward “representation, inclusion and equity.” Of the 2023 invitees, 40% identify as women, 34% belong to underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 52% are from 50 countries and territories outside the United States, according to the Academy. The class includes 76 Oscar nominees, including 22 winners.
