The first-year series “The Pitt” and “The Studio” are expected to be among the most honored programs when nominations for the 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards are announced Tuesday.
“The Pitt,” a Max medical drama starring Noah Wyle as a physician in a Pittsburgh emergency room, is considered by prognosticators as likely to receive one of the eight outstanding drama series nominations.
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 95% approval rating based on 77 critic reviews. David Sims of The Atlantic commented, “It’s already without question the finest example of the genre in more than a generation.”
“The Pitt” premiered Jan. 9, too late to be considered for most of the year’s other awards, but did win for outstanding breakthrough drama series at last month’s Gotham TV Awards.
Of last year’s eight nominees, only the Apple TV+ British spy thriller “Slow Horses” aired any new episodes during the June 1, 2024-May 31, 2025 eligibility period.
Past nominees that are contenders for nominations in the category Tuesday include the Apple TV+ science fiction psychological thriller “Severance”; the HBO drama anthology “The White Lotus”; the Disney+ “Star Wars” series “Andor”; the HBO post-apocalyptic drama “The Last of Us”; the Netflix dystopian survival thriller “Squid Game”; and the Hulu dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Contenders for first-time nominations in the category include the Netflix political thriller “The Diplomat” and the Hulu first-season political thriller “Paradise.”
No series from a major broadcast network has been nominated in the category since the NBC family drama “This Is Us” in 2019. A series from the major broadcast networks has not won since Fox’s “24” in 2006.
“The Studio” is a heavy favorite to be among the eight nominees for outstanding comedy series. The Apple TV+ satire starring Seth Rogen as a conflicted new head of a studio received a 93% approval rating based on 123 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Studio” won for best comedy series and Rogen for best actor in a comedy series at last month’s Astra TV Awards conducted by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association.
Last year’s winner in the category, HBO’s “Hacks,” is among the five of last year’s eight nominees that are eligible to be nominated Tuesday, along with ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”; FX’s “The Bear”; Hulu’s “Only Murders In The Building” and FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Other first-season series considered contenders for nominations include Netflix’s romantic comedy “Nobody Wants This,” and Netflix’s comedy-drama, “The Four Seasons.” The second-season Apple TV+ comedy-drama “Shrinking” is also a contender for a first-time nomination.
“Abbott Elementary” has been nominated for outstanding comedy series for each of its first three seasons. The most recent time a series from the major broadcast networks won in the category was 2014 when ABC’s “Modern Family” won for the fifth consecutive year.
All five of last year’s nominees for outstanding reality competition program are eligible to be nominated again Tuesday. Peacock’s murder mystery game “The Traitors” became a first-time winner last year.
Last year’s field also consisted of CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Bravo’s “Top Chef,” and the NBC singing competition “The Voice.”
“The Amazing Race” is expected to be nominated for the 22nd time in the 23 years the category has existed. It was nominated in each of the first 17 years, was not eligible in 2020 because CBS did not air a new season during the eligibility period, then nominated again each of the last four years. It is a 10-time winner, including each of the first seven.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” is expected to be nominated for the ninth consecutive year.
“Top Chef” has been nominated 18 consecutive years, and “The Voice” for 13 consecutive years.
CBS’ “Survivor” is also a contender for one of the five nominations. It has been nominated seven times, most recently in 2023.
The nominations will begin being announced on “CBS Mornings” at approximately 4:47 a.m. Pacific Time when the nominees for outstanding reality competition and outstanding talk series will be revealed.
Harvey Guillén, fellow actor Brenda Song and Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego will announce the nominations in key categories at 8:30 a.m. at the Wolf Theatre in the academy’s Saban Media Center at its North Hollywood headquarters. The announcement will be streamed live on Emmys.com/nominations.
Guillén is best known for his role as the conflicted vampire slayer and aspiring vampire Guillermo de la Cruz in the 2019-24 FX comedy horror mockumentary series “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Song portrays chief of staff Ali Lee on “Running Point” after being a cast member of the Disney Channel comedy, “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and its sequel, “The Suite Life on Deck.”
The 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live and be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze.
The bulk of the awards will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmys Sept. 6-7, also at the Peacock Theater. Those awards are mainly in technical categories such as picture editing, costuming, hairstyling, makeup and sound, but also include awards for guest acting.
