The Cinema Audio Society announced Tuesday it has opened submissions for its Jeffrey S. Wexler Award for Advancement in Sound Technology, recognizing innovations that have significantly influenced how sound is recorded, edited, mixed or delivered in film and television.
The organization said applications are now being accepted for the 2027 award, with a submission deadline of June 30.
The honor, introduced at this year’s CAS Awards, is a juried prize evaluated by the group’s Engineering and Technology Committee.
Eligible submissions include individuals, companies or specific technologies that have improved existing sound practices or introduced groundbreaking methods that have materially changed the field.
Entries may be submitted by CAS members, manufacturers, inventors or committee representatives, and the award may be presented to multiple recipients.
The award is named for the late Jeffrey S. Wexler, a longtime production mixer and industry leader whose career spanned more than four decades and over 70 films, according to the organization.
Wexler was an early adopter of digital audio tape and a pioneer in file-based production recording, helping shape modern sound workflows. His honors included a BAFTA Award for best sound for “Almost Famous,” along with Academy Award nominations and multiple Emmy and CAS nominations.
The inaugural award, presented earlier this year, recognized advancements in nonlinear sound technology and was awarded to Evan Brooks, Peter Gotcher, Glenn Sanders and Howard Stark.
“The Jeffrey S. Wexler Award offers important recognition to those in our industry engaged in the critical innovation that constantly furthers both our efficiency and creativity,” CAS President Peter Kurland said in a statement. “Jeff was a true trailblazer and creative force — changing how we work and how we think about our work.”
The 63rd CAS Awards are scheduled for March 6, 2027, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where winners in multiple sound-mixing categories will also be honored.
Founded in 1964, the Cinema Audio Society is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of sound in motion pictures and television.
