“Toy Story 5” opened with $160 million at North American theaters this weekend, the biggest opening in franchise history and the largest opening for any movie this year, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The latest edition in the saga of Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jesse and other children’s toys features series regulars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack and was directed by Andrew Stanton. The franchise, which is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Disney, began with the original “Toy Story” in 1995.
Director Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” was second with $17 million, one week after opening in first place with $44 million, Rentrak reported.
“Obsession,” 26-year-old YouTube comedian Curry Barker’s low-budget horror film, continued its phenomenal run with $14.2 million Friday through Sunday in its sixth weekend in theaters.
Another low-budget horror film from a young director with an internet pedigree, 20-year-old Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms,” was fourth with $7.3 million in its fourth weekend.
“Scary Movie” was fifth with $6.7 million in its third week.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Masters of the Universe” ($5.59 million), “Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu” ($3.9 million), “Leviticus” ($2.7 million), “The Death of Robin Hood” ($2.6 million) and “Michael” ($2.1 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $230 million. The year-to-date total is $4.463 billion — up 14% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
