Some motorists trying to reach Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica will have to find another route starting Monday, when crews close a connector street between the famed roadway and Ocean Avenue near the Santa Monica Pier.

Moomat Ahiko, a short, curved roadway that carries traffic to and from PCH from Ocean Avenue just south of the pier, was closed in both directions at 7 a.m. Monday and will remain closed until Oct. 6, according to the city.

Construction crews will be improving and repaving the street. Motorists trying to reach PCH will have to use the Santa Monica (10) Freeway or the California Incline, which connects PCH with Ocean Avenue north of Wilshire Boulevard.

The work on Moomat Ahiko is being done to ensure the roadway is improved before a planned 12- to 18-month closure of the California Incline scheduled this fall. That project will demolish the existing California Incline bridge and replace it with a new, wider structure.
