A newly finished stretch of bike path in Pacoima was unveiled Thursday by Los Angeles City Councilman Felipe Fuentes and transportation officials.

The section, along San Fernando Road between Wolfskill Street and the San Fernando city limits, is the second of three phases in a project to build a 3-mile path along a railroad right-of-way.

About 30,000 cars use San Fernando Road in Pacoima everyday, officials said.

“Bikers no longer have to compete for the road with motorists,” now that the bike path offering a “safe” way to get to “work, school or other activities” is an option, said Fuentes, the council’s 7th district representative.

The 12-foot wide path features lighting, striping, traffic signs and a bridge over the Pacoima Wash. It also includes security fencing, pedestrian crossings and landscaping.

The third phase of the project is in the 6th Council District, and funding is expected to be approved next week by the Southern California Association of Governments.
