City of Hope announced Friday a $60 million investment aimed at combating diabetes.

The funds will be used to expand research efforts through its new Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute, City of Hope officials said, citing projections that about one in three people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with diabetes by 2050 make diabetes research crucial.

“The institute will accelerate our efforts to discover new treatments and potential cures for this serious health threat,” City of Hope’s Dr. Steven T. Rosen said.
