A non-injury brush fire scorched about three acres Thursday afternoon near Glendale Community College before firefighters on the ground and in helicopters halted its progress.

No structures were threatened and no evacuations were ordered as a result of the blaze, which was reported about 1:45 p.m. near the Glendale (2) Freeway and Mountain Street.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent two helicopters and a first-alarm brush fire response contingent to assist the Glendale Fire Department in battling the flames, said county fire Inspector Randall Wright.

Mountain Street was temporarily closed between Verdugo Road and the freeway, from which flames and smoke were visible at the height of the firefight. The Mountain Street off-ramp from the southbound Glendale Freeway was also temporarily closed.

A city official announced at 2:47 p.m. that firefighters had gained the upper hand on the fire and were focusing on hotspots. Some Glendale Fire Department personnel were expected to remain on scene through the night to guard against any flareups.
