The American Red Cross has opened two shelters for Palmdale area residents displaced from their homes by a debris flow of mud and rocks brought by severe thunderstorms, it was announced Friday.

The shelters sites are the Marie Kerr Recreation Center, 2723 Rancho Vista Blvd., Palmdale; and Mojave High School, 15732 O St., Mojave.

Additionally, 135 children and 15 adults who were on a field trip from Arvin, California and were unable to return home due to the closure of the Golden State (5) Freeway are staying at the Palmdale Learning Plaza, under the watch of two local school districts.

They will remain there because parents and family already have been informed they are there.
