Joseph F. Stifter, who died on Thursday, was in Al Anbar Province supporting Operation Inherent Resolve at the time of the rollover crash, according to the DoD.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.
“Sergeant Stifter bravely answered the call to serve our country, and we will forever be indebted to him for his service and sacrifice on our behalf,” U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran said in a statement quoted by the Topeka Capitol-Journal.
Stifter leaves behind a wife and daughter, according to Moran.
“My deepest sympathies go out to his family, and I ask all Kansans to join me in keeping his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the senator said.
