A 27-year-old construction worker fell 50 feet Friday into a well in Bel-Air and was pronounced dead after a lengthy rescue effort.

Firefighters were summoned at 2:48 p.m. to the 900 block of North Bel Air Road, where the man had fallen into a sump well, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The victim was floating face-down and motionless when confined-rescue specialists were called to extract the man from the concrete well, Humphrey said.

At 5:23 p.m. the worker was determined to be beyond medical help and was pronounced dead at the scene, Humphrey said. His name was not immediately released.

The fire department was working with the coroner’s office to recover the man’s body.
