Boulders and piles of dirt remained piled on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, and Caltrans officials said the twisting link between the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica would remain closed Monday.

The road — also known as state Route 27 — was closed in last week’s heavy rains.

A large hillside liquefied and flowed onto the road in one place, and in another, a sedan-sized rock had bounced onto the road.

Caltrans spokesman Michael Comeaux said Caltrans, and a contractor hired by the state, will be using large trucks and earthmovers on the narrow road.

The road’s lower 3-1/2 miles are closed, between Pacific Coast Highway and Grandview Drive, in the heart of the Topanga Canyon village.

Further north in the village, Caltrans crews were continuing their guardrail replacement project, which is unrelated to the storm. Flaggers may be directing traffic there, Comeaux said.

The road closure has blocked a frequent commuter shortcut between the Valley and the Westside, but lessened traffic along Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and Santa Monica. It has added traffic to Malibu Canyon Road and a few narrow, twisting backcountry roads through the Santa Monica Mountains, according to traffic reporters.
