“Wonder Woman” continued to perform wonders at the nation’s box offices this weekend, and the hit was expected to close the day with $205 million in the bank over 10 days of showings.
This weekend, the Warner Bros. release was expected to sell $57.2 million in tickets in the United States and Canada this weekend, according to studio projections gathered by comScore.
Movie industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian credited “a perfectly cast Gal Gadot in the lead role” along with a well-timed release date, “killer” marketing campaign and “above all a great movie.”
“The Mummy” opened in second place with a $32.2 million total.
And in its second week of showings, “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” was banking on a $12.3 million weekend and a running domestic total gate of $44.6 million.
“Pirates Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was on track for a $10.7 million weekend, but its gross of $135.8 million paled in comparison to the runaway “Wonder Woman.”
“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2” still had legs, with a $6.2 million weekend on tap and a running six-week total of $366.3 million.
Rounding out the 10 most popular movies in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “It Comes At Night” (premiering at $6 million), “Baywatch” ($4.6 million), “Megan Leavey” (premiering at $3.8 million), “Alien: Covenant” ($1.8 million) and “Everything, Everything” ($1.6 million).
