A 57-year-old Pomona man was fatally struck by a car on the Long Beach (710) Freeway in Compton, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

The crash occurred about 8:35 p.m. Saturday on the southbound Long Beach Freeway just north of Alondra Boulevard, according to the CHP, which initially reported the incident as a multi-vehicle wreck based on witness accounts.

Responding officers found the pedestrian underneath a black Honda sedan along the right shoulder of the freeway, according to CHP Officer B. DePaz. The motorist remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives. It was not immediately clear why he was on the freeway, DePaz said.
