Fire damaged one unit in a six-story assisted living facility for seniors Wednesday evening in the Vermont-Slauson area.

Firefighters responded to the Progressive Home for the Elderly at 7010 S. Denver Ave., near Figueroa Street, at 9:55 p.m. and found fire burning in a unit on the fifth floor of the facility and smoke in the hallway, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A total of 22 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and assist residents with sheltering in place to avoid the smoke in the hallway. A knock down was called at 10:11 p.m., he said.

Crews placed large fans in the hallway to blow smoke out of the upper floors of the building, Prange said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
