A helicopter rescue crew hoisted an injured hiker to safety from a trail in La Quinta Friday.
The injury was reported at about 10:50 a.m. on the Bear Creek Oasis Trail, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Initially, fire officials said that firefighters were trekking seven miles from the trailhead to reach the injured hiker, but later said that due to the location being hard to reach, a helicopter was requested.
The helicopter crew successfully performed a hoist rescue and took the injured hiker to an awaiting ground ambulance. The person, whose identity was not disclosed, was hospitalized with moderate injuries, fire officials said.
This is the second day in a row that rescue crews were called out to help a hiker on a Coachella Valley trail. On Thanksgiving, firefighters responded to a report that a hiker collapsed on a trail east of Mecca but despite their rescue efforts, the hiker later died.
