An inmate from Los Angeles County walked away from a minimum-security fire camp near Sacramento, officials said Sunday.
Edgar Benitez, 25, left the Growlersberg Conservation Camp in El Dorado County on Saturday night, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
During an inmate count at around 11 p.m., staff discovered that Benitez was not in his assigned housing area. A search of the camp buildings and grounds was immediately conducted. Benitez was last seen at 10 p.m. during a head count.
CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety, Cal Fire and local law enforcement agencies were notified and were assisting in the search.
Benitez is 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was received from Los Angeles County on Dec. 26, 2017. He was sentenced to serve nine years for driving under the influence causing bodily injury/death.
Anyone who sees Benitez was urged to contact 911 or local law enforcement authorities immediately.
