Parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles have united to raise funds for the Guadalupe Procession and Mass in East L.A., it was announced Friday.
The Resurrection Parish in Boyle Heights and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Guadalupe Committee will host the “Tardeada” fundraiser on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be held at the Resurrection Parish in Boyle Heights, at 3324 Opal St. Masks will be required for the outdoor event.
Due to COVID-19, the fundraiser, now in its 15th year, was held virtually in 2020.
Entertainment, food and raffle prizes have been donated for the fundraiser, and all funds raised will go directly to cover the costs of the procession and return the celebration to East L.A. College Stadium for its 90th anniversary.
“The Guadalupe Procession and Mass would not be possible if it wasn’t for the hard work and support of our parish Guadalupano groups,” director of the Guadalupe Committee, Father Julio Ramos, said in a statement. “This event reflects the love of our faithful for Our Lady of Guadalupe.
“The faithful took to the streets 90 years ago to pray for Our Lady’s intercession during challenging times. Our Guadalupano groups are hoping to bring the celebration back to where it began, in East L.A., to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and celebrate her message of love, unity and hope, especially during these difficult times we are now facing.”
The Guadalupe Procession and Mass is the oldest religious procession in L.A. It was established by Mexican Catholics fleeing persecution in 1931. Prior to the pandemic, 40,000 people gathered on the first Sunday in December to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe.
This year’s theme is “Our Lady of Guadalupe: Forward in Mission and Hope.”
