James Michael Tyler, 59, who played the slightly irascible barista Gunther at Central Perk on “Friends” for all 10 seasons died Sunday after a battle with prostate cancer, according to his friend and manager, Toni Benson.

“If you met him once you made a friend for life,” Benson wrote in a tribute emailed to the Hollywood Reporter.

Tyler reported in June on the Sunday show that he had stage 4 prostate cancer. He was first diagnosed in September 2018 during a physical.

“My goal this past year was to see my 59th birthday. I did that,” Tyler said. “My goal now is to at least save one life.”

Tyler worked as a barista at the Bourgeois Pig on Franklin Avenue in Hollywood when he was asked to be a background player and work the levers of the Central Perk espresso machine on the show. He spent two seasons and 33 appearances before receiving his first line of dialogue on the show.

Gunther appeared on 150 of the 236 episodes on the show. His last appearance was May 6,2004. He also appeared on the soap “All My Children,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Scrubs.”

Gunther provided background color on “Friends” at the characters’ gatherings.

Tyler was born in Mississippi. He graduated from Clemson University and earned a masters degree from the University of Georgia.

He is survived by his second wife, script coordinator Jennifer Carno.
