A 42-year-old man was killed before sunrise Thursday when his 1969 Volkswagen Beetle rear-ended a big rig on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway near the Mulholland Drive off-ramp.
The truck was being driven at a “low speed” around 4:40 a.m. when the car crashed into it and became lodged underneath it, a California Highway Patrol spokesman told City News Service.
Jarrett Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, the CHP reported.
All southbound lanes of the freeway in the vicinity of the crash were closed while the CHP conducted its investigation. Some lanes were reopened about an hour afterward, but two right lanes remained closed until shortly after 11 a.m., the CHP reported.
