Torrance’s 62nd annual Armed Forces Day Parade will be held Saturday with the U.S. Space Force as the honored military branch and Lt. Gen. Philip A. Garrant as the grand marshal.

The parade is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Crenshaw Boulevard and travel one mile west on Torrance Boulevard to Madrona Avenue. It is expected to end at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Retired Space Force Col. Michael Hopkins is the honorary grand marshal. He flew two missions to the International Space Station.

Garrant is commander of the Space Force’s Space Systems Command, headquartered at the Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo. The command manages a $15.6 billion space acquisition budget for the Department of Defense and works to develop, acquire, equip and sustain resilient space capabilities to support U.S. and Allied forces.

The parade began in 1960 in an attempt to “increase public respect and understanding for military service and promote civic-military relationships,” then-Mayor Albert lsen said. It is held on Armed Forces Day, celebrated on the third Saturday in May.
