Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn called Tuesday for a federal investigation after a large block of ice crashed through the roof of a home in an unincorporated Whittier neighborhood.

The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. Friday, when a chunk of what appeared to be dirty ice fell from the sky, punched through the ceiling and landed on a living room couch, according to Hahn’s office.

Tenant Yuder Grau said he heard what sounded like an explosion and discovered the debris inside the home.

Homeowner Thania Magana said flight tracking data showed an aircraft was passing over the area at the time, according to Hahn.

In a letter to FAA Acting Regional Administrator Chris Rocheleau, Hahn urged a thorough and timely investigation into the source of the object.

“We are lucky that Yuder was not in his living room when this block of ice crashed through his ceiling,” Hahn said in a statement. “I am bringing this incident to the attention of the FAA because they need to investigate what happened and take whatever steps necessary to prevent it from happening again.”

Magana told NBC4 that Grau had been in the living room shortly before the incident but moved to a bedroom moments earlier.

“I keep replaying it and just thinking of the what if,” Magana said. “The first thing that comes to mind is that he probably wouldn’t be here with us.”

No one was injured.

“While such incidents are rare, the potential consequences are extremely serious,” Hahn wrote in the letter. “Whether the material originated from aircraft systems, waste leakage, or another source, this event raises important concerns about aviation safety over densely populated communities in Los Angeles County.”
