An unknown substance leaking from a trailer prompted the shutdown of a stretch of the San Gabriel River (60) Freeway Friday in South El Monte.

About 9:45 a.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol was advised of the leak on the southbound side of the freeway just north of the Pomona (60) Freeway.

Officers determined the incident involved a hazardous material and initially shut down one, then two lanes of the freeway, but as of about 1:30 p.m., all lanes of the freeway were shut down in both directions, according to the CHP.

“CHP officers and additional personnel are on scene working diligently to open the roadway as soon as possible,” according to CHP Officer Aaron Zamarron.

Zamarron encouraged anyone commuting through the area to consider the San Bernardino (10), Pomona (60), Golden State (5) and Long Beach (710) freeways as alternative routes.
