A convicted carjacker and robber who walked away from a male community reentry program facility in Los Angeles County was located in Virginia Wednesday and taken into custody.
DeJohn W. Snell, 28, was apprehended around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday following a traffic stop by U.S. Marshals, with leads from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Office of Correctional Safety, according to state officials.
Snell was booked into the Peninsula Regional Jail in Williamsburg, Virginia, on suspicion of an escape warrant, and is expected to be extradited to California, where he will be rehoused at a CDCR institution.
State officials said Snell’s case is expected to be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for possible escape charges after he walked away from the male community reentry program on Aug. 16.
Snell was transferred to Los Angeles County on Sept. 30, 2025, after being sentenced to six years in prison for carjacking and second-degree robbery.
According to state officials, nearly 99% of incarcerated people who have escaped or walked away from an adult institution, camp, in-state contract bed, or community rehabilitative program placement since 1977 have been apprehended.
