A year-old girl was saved from drowning by a family member in La Palma, authorities said Wednesday.

Family members were gathered at the front of a residence in the 7300 block of Dallas Drive when it was noticed around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday that the baby was missing, Orange County Fire Authority Captain Steve Concialdi said. A family member then found her floating in a backyard pool and began administering CPR, he said.

Paramedics called to the scene took over, and the baby was hospitalized in serious condition, Concialdi said. A gate to the swimming pool had had been left open, he said.

“In hot weather, children are drawn to the water, and we need to make sure there are multiple barriers that are closed and locked,” Concialdi said.

Of the 56 such incidents Orange County Fire Authority paramedics have dealt with this year, 21 were fatal, Concialdi said.
