A 35-year-old man shown using a motorized chair in video from a grocery store moments before getting up and allegedly robbing the manager was charged with several felonies Monday.
Antonio Delgado Juarez, who can walk fine, was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery, a count of second-degree burglary, carjacking, kidnapping for carjacking and kidnapping to commit robbery, all felonies.
Santa Ana police asked for the public’s help last week tracking down the suspect in the Sept. 18 robbery at a Food 4 Less at 2140 S. Bristol St.
The robber grabbed the manager from behind, put him in a headlock and forced him to an office, where the manager and a bookkeeper were ordered to fill the man’s backpack with cash, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The robber then got the manager’s car keys and had the man lead him to a 2001 Toyota Echo that he drove off in, Bertagna said.
After the video was aired, investigators got a tip that the robber was Juarez, who was already jailed in a break-in that turned violent in a Santa Ana apartment on Sept. 22, Bertagna said.
Over the weekend, a search of Juarez’s home turned up more than $2,700 in cash, Bertagna said. The stolen Toyota was not found, he said.
On Sept. 22, Juarez allegedly broke into a truck but didn’t take anything, Bertagna said. Later, Juarez broke into an apartment, but was soon confronted by the renter and his daughter, Bertagna said.
“He was in the living room, and there was only one way in or out and there was an altercation,” Bertagna said.
Juarez allegedly knocked down the resident and punched him several times before fleeing, Bertagna said. With help from officers using a helicopter, Juarez was tracked down and arrested, Bertagna said.
For those incidents, Juarez is charged with single counts each of first- degree burglary and second-degree burglary as well as three counts of vandalism, all felonies, according to court records. Juarez also faces misdemeanor counts of assault, battery and possession of burglary tools.
