The driver of a van that crashed in Irvine, killing both men aboard, was identified Tuesday by the coroner’s office as 50-year-old David Borders of Rancho Cucamonga.
Borders was driving a 2000 Ford Econoline E350 van on the transition road from the southbound Eastern Transportation Corridor (133) to the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway about 9:05 p.m. Monday when he made an “unsafe turning movement, causing the Ford to travel off the roadway” and slam into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Borders and his 47-year-old passenger were ejected from the van and sustained fatal injuries, according to the CHP.
The passenger was from Ontario, according to the CHP. His name was withheld pending family notification.
