A young couple were sent to prison Tuesday for the attempted murder of the woman’s ex-boyfriend in Costa Mesa in 2012.

Jessica Gascon, 21, pleaded guilty to assault with a semiautomatic firearm and was immediately sentenced to nine years in prison.

Fernando Sanchez, 20, was given a 20-year term for his Sept. 18 guilty plea to attempted murder, assault with a firearm, criminal threats and discharge of a firearm at an inhabited dwelling.

Gascon and the victim briefly dated, according to Costa Mesa police.

On April 10, 2012, Gascon and the 20-year-old man, whose name was not released, saw each other about 10 p.m. Later that night, Gascon told Sanchez that the victim had made unwanted sexual advances toward her, according to prosecutors.

Sanchez and Gascon went to the man’s home about midnight, and Gascon called him from her cell phone and asked him to meet her outside. When he came out of his home, Sanchez confronted him at gunpoint, prompting the man to run away.

Sanchez fired a shot at the man but missed, and the bullet went into a home in the 500 block of Wilson Street. No one was hurt.

Later that day, Sanchez posted threatening messages about the victim on Facebook, prosecutors said.
