A Newport Beach man who was shot by police last summer pleaded guilty Monday to assault with a semiautomatic firearm and was sentenced to 240 days in jail.
Scott Jay Abraham, 43, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic weapon, according to court records. Two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic rifle were dropped, along with a felony count of grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.
Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots just before 9:45 p.m. July 11, 2014, in the 4600 block of Seashore Drive, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said. Arriving officers saw a suspect exit a residence onto a beach- facing patio and open fire at least once in the direction of the ocean, although it was not clear if he was aiming at anything in particular, Manzella said.
Two officers opened fire on the suspect, who was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in critical condition at the time, Manzella said.
The officers were unhurt.
Abraham was also ordered to serve five years on formal probation.
