A suspected car thief led police on a brief pursuit in Santa Ana on Sunday, and was arrested, but the passenger took “foot bail” and escaped, police said.
An officer patrolling the area of south Fairview Street and west Edinger Avenue around 6:40 a.m. spotted an Acura MDX that had been reported stolen on Saturday and attempted to pull it over, said Cmmdr. Jeff Smith of the Santa Ana Police Department.
Instead, the car sped off and led the officer on a chase for about three minutes, Smith said.
The chase came to an end in the 600 block of south Harmon Street when the vehicle slowed down enough so the driver and passenger could jump out, the commander said.
The driver was immediately arrested, but the passenger evaded capture, Smith said. He was described as a Hispanic male and about 5-feet 8-pinches tall, weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing dark-colored jacket and dark pants.
Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call 1-855- TIP-OCCS.
