The alleged “Big A Bandit” made his initial appearance today in federal court on charges of robbing several banks in Orange County, one of them more than once.

Robert Paul Simmons, 51, was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his Santa Ana residence. According to FBI Special Agent Chris Gicking, Simmons is charged with three robberies, and is suspected in three additional heists.

A tip led FBI agents to Simmons’ door, Gicking said. Two bank tellers picked him out of a lineup, he said.

It’s not clear when Simmons is due back in court because the complaint filed against him has been sealed.

The Big A Bandit — who got the moniker because he would wear a T-shirt and ball cap bearing the Los Angeles Angels logo — is suspected of robbing a Bank of the West branch in Fullerton on four occasions — May 10, 2013, Oct. 4, 2013, Dec. 6, 2013, and July 2 of this year.

He is also accused of robbing a Comerica Bank branch in Anaheim on June 2 of this year and a Bank of the West branch in La Habra on June 25.
