Detectives were trying to discover Friday how a woman’s body ended up inside a refrigerator found at a recently vacated rented garage in Santa Ana.

It wasn’t clear if they believe the body may have been that of a murder victim or had been placed there under other circumstances.

Police were called to the 1000 block of North Jackson Street about 2 p.m. Thursday, Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The home has a garage and another structure in the back, where rooms were being rented, Bertagna said. The most recent residents of the garage moved out and left the refrigerator, he said.

As the residence was being tidied up, the cleaners opened the refrigerator and made the grisly discovery, Bertagna said.

“We’re trying to determine who was living there and when did they leave and what relationship this body has to those people,” Bertagna said.

There were no obvious signs of the cause of death, he said. An autopsy is pending.
