An apartment fire in Santa Ana Monday displaced a family whose pet turtle and parrot were brought to safety.

The blaze started for unknown reasons about 10:50 a.m. in the 600 block of East Walnut Street and was knocked down just before 11:20 a.m., according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters managed to get the occupants’ parrot and turtle out safely, Kurtz said.

The flames spread to an upstairs attic, and a neighboring apartment sustained some minor damage, Kurtz said.
