Tracking software in a stolen laptop led to the arrest in Irvine of the alleged thief, police said.

The suspect was identified as 49-year-old Irvine resident Steve Chang Lin, according to Irvine police Cmdr. Mike Hallinan Thursday.

At about 12:40 p.m., the owner of an Irvine restaurant left his laptop on a table in the main dining area so he could assist employees in the kitchen, and as he watched through the kitchen window, he saw a man remove the computer and leave the business, Hallinan said.

The owner tracked the computer using the “Find My Mac” application and then called police.

“During the course of their investigation, responding Irvine Police Department officers worked with the restaurant owner and were able to successfully locate the stolen property (at an Irvine home),” Hallinan said.

Detectives secured a search warrant and Lin was arrested without further incident, the commander said.
