A family tragedy unfolded in Irvine Thursday as police said a man apparently shot and killed his mother, then fatally shot himself inside a home in the city’s Turtle Rock neighborhood.
Officers did not provide any information about a motive in the murder-suicide, nor what kind of relationship the two had that led to their deaths.
The bodies were discovered shortly after 12:20 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a call reporting two victims, a man and a woman, inside a residence on Hexham, the Irvine Police Department reported.
The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department identified the victims, who were dead when officers arrived, as Ryan Yau, 27, and his 64-year-old mother, Polly Yau.
“The preliminary investigation … indicates the decedents were mother and son,” a police statement said. “Evidence at the scene suggests that the son shot his mother, and then turned the gun on himself. IPD detectives have recovered a handgun in close proximity of the scene. There were no other injuries reported.”
The circumstances leading up to the shooting were under investigation.
“There remains no indication of an outstanding suspect or danger to the surrounding community,” police said.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detective Gavin Hudson at (949) 724-7168.
