A man was seriously hurt Friday morning when he lost control of his truck and drove off an overpass in Orange, dropping 30 feet into a drainage ditch, police said.

Officers received a call at 12:28 a.m. to respond to the accident near the intersection of Collins Avenue and Handy Street, on an overpass of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway.

The 45-year-old driver lost control of his Toyota pickup and drove through a fence and off the roadway, falling 30 feet into a drainage culvert, said Orange Police Sgt. Sean O’Toole.

Witnesses told officers a bystander who heard the crash pulled the driver out of the vehicle and responding emergency crews took him to a hospital to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, O’Toole said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, he said.
