Authorities Sunday were trying to figure out why a 26-year-old man suddenly ran in front of a semi-truck and was struck and killed on the San Diego (5) Freeway in Irvine.

The man, who died at the scene, was later identified as Laguna Beach resident Ryan Tornell, according to the coroner’s office. The CHP did not speculate on a possible suicide motive, nor was there any word of drugs or alcohol being involved.

The death on the southbound freeway at Bake Parkway occurred at 4 a.m. Saturday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Tornell was standing on the right shoulder of the freeway when he ran directly into the path of a 2014 semi-truck driven by a 33-year-old resident of San Bernardino.

The CHP’s Santa Ana office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (714) 567-6000.
