A fast-moving brush fire charred about 60 acres in San Juan Capistrano Sunday, threatened 50 homes and other buildings, and left one firefighter injured before it was finally knocked down, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

“We managed to keep it to about 60 acres and right now we are in the mopping up stage,” OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz said at about 4:45 p.m.

“One firefighter was injured and he was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries,” Kurtz added, declining to discuss the exact nature of the firefighter’s injuries.

The fire broke out near San Juan Hills High School, off La Pata Avenue and south of the Ortega Highway, at 11:49 a.m. A force of 120 firefighters, two bulldozers and two helicopters saved the subdivision and other structures near the fire.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Kurtz added.
